Set in 16th century Japan, Kagemusha (1980) is the story of three clans and their leaders: Shingen Takeda (Tatsuya Nakadai), Nobunaga Oda (Daisuke Ryu) and Ieyasu Tokugawa (Masayuki Yui). There is a civil war occurring, and the three vie for control of the land. Shingen is killed, and the Takeda clan has to hide this from the other two lords. They force a poor thief, Kagemusha, (Tatsuya Nakadai) to play the role Shingen, saving him from execution in return. Kagemusha has the physical appearance of Shingen, but in spirit and honor, he must find a way to transform himself from a criminal into a respected warlord.
